TABS Group's CEO, Dr. Kurt Jetta, weighed in on the A&P bankruptcy announcement yesterday. As Jetta wrote, this announcement comes as no surprise to the industry, as the 156-year-old chain has been more or less irrelevant for the past 20 years.
A&P's demise represents both a case study in grocery retailing and economics at large. We clearly see that dominance can shift to irrelevance with companies that can't, or won't, innovate fast enough. Further, if management values bureaucracy over action and ignores its consumers, then a company will eventually become irrelevant and find its customers, competitors and the industry thinking "who cares?"...
